A BAMBOO ROOT WASHER

17TH CENTURY

LENGTH: 17.8CM

The bamboo root washer is naturalistically formed into a large and a small plum blossom flanked by a spray of smaller flower buds issuing from a single severed branch. The interior well of the washer reveals its pistil and stamen.

SIMILAR EXAMPLE
A similarly composed bamboo root carving of a lotus leaf in the collection of the National Palace Museum is published in Treasures from the Scholar’s Studio, Kyoto, 1992, p. 148, Catalogue No. 120.
