QING DYNASTY, KANGXI PERIOD (1662–1722)
Of circular, slightly irregular section and tapered form, the large stained huanghuali brushpot is carved with naturalistically gnarled knots all along its exterior in high relief, resembling the trunk of a tree. The mouth and base are fitted with zitan.
A zitan brushpot of similar carving and size is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, Hong Kong, 2002, p. 56, Catalogue No. 51.
