The carver has followed the natural form of the pebble to depict a recumbent mythical beast with furrowed brows and a split tail curled around the length of its body. The yellow jade is slightly greenish in tone, with traces of russet beneath the glossy finish.
A white jade mythical beast of similar posture and carving is illustrated in Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, pp. 164-165, Catalogue No. 150.
