A CARVED BOXWOOD RUYI SCEPTRE

QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

LENGTH: 19CM

The ruyi is naturalistically carved from a single material and carved into a large lingzhi head rising from a knotted branch issuing twelve smaller fungi. The ruyi is richly patinated to a deep caramel colour.

The lingzhi fungus is a Daoist symbol standing for longevity and immortality ruyi sceptres became popular amongst the literati as gifts for well-wishing.
