QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The sceptre is carved in the shape of a large lingzhi with two smaller fungi flanking the head and another small fungi alongside the stalk. The handle is covered with carved knots and burls and curved in a naturalistic manner. The boxwood surface is patinated to a reddish caramel tone.
A ruyi sceptre with a similar head and design and material is published in Arts from the Scholar’s Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, Catalogue No. 6.
