A GREY LINGBI SCHOLAR’S ROCK

QING DYNASTY (1644-1911), TWO CHARACTER ‘YUN YAN’ MARK

LENGTH (EXCLUDING STAND): 13.7CM;
(INCLUDING STAND): 14.5CM

The resonant lingbi stone is in the form of a horizontal mountain peak and rests on a shallow wooden stand. The colour of the stone is dark grey in tone with white waxy inclusions and veining throughout. A two-character ‘yun yan’ 雲嚴 (‘cloud on clay’) mark is incised on the frontal right hand side of the rock.

The inscription alludes to the white lustrous inclusions on the surface, floating as if clouds on a mountaintop.
