A LONGQUAN ‘CONG’ WATERPOT

SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY (1127-1279)

DIAMETER: 7.2CM

The stoneware waterpot is moulded in the shape of a short squat cong, after the archaic jade form. The waterpot is covered overall with a pale jade-like sea-green glaze and raised on a narrow sharply cut footring.

SIMILAR EXAMPLES
The Longquan kilns in Zhejiang are known to have produced wares in imitation of jade cong. An example of such pieces is published in Heavenly Blue: Southern Song Celadon, Tokyo, 2010, p. 45, Catalogue No. 16, however small washers of this type are extremely unusual.
