A BAMBOO VENEER BRUSHPOT

QING DYNASTY, 18-19TH CENTURY

HEIGHT: 14.2CM

Of double lozenge section, the brushpot is pieced together from several panels and bound by a thick keyfret-patterned mouth and footrim. The surface is decorated on either side with landscape scenes carved in shallow relief. One side of the brushpot suggests a scene from Chapter 37 of the Sanguo Zhi Yanyi (The Romance of the Three Kingdoms), which depicts the visit of Liu Bei, accompanied by Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, to Zhuge Liang. An inscription incised on a flattened rockwork surface on the same side is dated to the Ninth Month of the Dingyou year [1777 or 1837] 丁酉九月 and signed by Yuanleng 元冷.

The surface of the bamboo veneer is well patinated to a deep caramel colour.
