A BRONZE ‘GUI’ CENSER’

SONG DYNASTY (960-1279)

LENGTH (ACROSS HANDLES): 14.8CM

The bronze is cast in the form of an archaistic ‘gui’ vessel standing on a high pedestal foot. The vessel has two looped handles issuing from animal heads and is decorated on the exterior with inlaid gold and silver taotie designs.

PROVENANCE:
Frederick Anthony White, a wealthy cement manufacturer based in London in the late 19th to early 20th century who had an interest in art and architecture.
