A LARGE IMPERIAL BAMBOO TRAY

QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

LENGTH: 21CM

The underside of the large bamboo tray is carved to depict a bat with its wings outstretched and a fruiting lingzhi sprig. The front of the tray remains undecorated with a raised band accenting the rim. The bamboo is patinated to a rich colour.

SIMILAR EXAMPLE:
Examples of similar trays in ivory and zitan are known, however, other examples in bamboo do not seem to exist. A similar ivory tray in the shape of a leaf is published in Zhongguo zhumu yajiao qi quanji Volume 4: Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn 中國竹木牙角器全集4:牙角器, 2009, p. 106, Catalogue No. 48.
