AN IMPERIAL CARNELIAN VESSEL

QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

HEIGHT (INCLUDING STAND): 7.5CM

The carnelian is carved in the shape of a lotus pad, its sides cupped to form a libation cup. The edge of the pad is curled and a network of veins covers the outside of the vessel, all supported on a stem which further issues a lotus pod, a bud and a reed flanking either side of the vessel. The lotus pad is flanked on the outside by a crab and a carp.

The carnelian is soft orange in colour resembling coral.
