A CARVED BAMBOO ROOT 'DOUBLE GOURD' WATERPOT

Qing Dynasty, 18th Century

Length: 9.3cm

The bamboo root is carved in the form of a hollowed double gourd issuing from a curled leafy vine extending erratically under and over the vessel. The bamboo is well patinated to a deep brown tone and rests on a wooden stand carved conformingly.

SIMILAR EXAMPLE
Bamboo carvings shaped as double gourds are more common in the form of a box and cover. Such examples include a double gourd published in Bamboo Carving of China, 1983, p. 88, Catalogue No. 26
