A BRONZE CENSER

MING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY, SIX-CHARACTER ‘DA MING
XUANDE NIANZHI’ MARK

WIDTH (ACROSS HANDLES): 18.4CM

The heavily cast censer is of bombé form with a tapered neck and gently flared lip flanked by two loop handles and resting on a splayed foot. The base has a six-character ‘Da Ming Xuande Nianzhi’ 大明宣德年製 mark cast in relief within a recessed panel. The surface is well patinated and decorated with traces of gilt splashes and further enhanced by cinnabar red lacquer accents that resemble patina encrustation.
