A ‘CHICKEN BONE’ JADE CENSER

MING DYNASTY, ZHENGDE PERIOD (1506-1521)
DIAMETER: 10.4CM

The jade is of a squat cylindrical form resting on three semi-elliptical shaped feet extending from the base. The surface of the censer is decorated in low relief with three cloud-shaped cartouches each inscribed with Arabic characters translated to ‘There is no God but the [one] God, and Mohammad is the messenger of God.’ The jade is of a creamy mottled white tone with grey and black streaks around the upper half of the vessel.
