QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
HEIGHT: 14.8CM
The brushpot is carved in relief from an oblong cylindrical section depicting a group of six scholars in front of a lush bamboo grove under a pine tree amidst a continuous rocky landscape. The mountain is detailed with jagged rocks that extend to the mouth and along the footring. The bamboo is patinated to a warm brown colour.
SIMILAR EXAMPLE
Bamboo brushpots with designs that extend to the foot are exceedingly rare. A
brushpot carved in a similar style is published in The Minor Arts of China III, 1987,
p. 29, Catalogue No. 22.
