LIAO/JIN DYNASTY (907-1234)
The box is circular in shape with a domed cover and resting on a shallow ring foot. The cover is carved in openwork with a deer, its head turned back, flanked by lingzhis and a lotus leaf against foliage, all within a plain border. The agate material is translucent grey and honey with opaque white striations and wellpolished throughout.
A similar russet skin white jade box and cover from the same period is published in Jades of Tang Through Qing Dynasties, p. 93, Catalogue No. 28. A jade plaque example with the same motif is illustrated in Jadeware (II): The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, p. 59, Catalogue No. 50.
