Ming Dynasty, 16th Century
The jade box and its cover are both carved in shallow relief with fruiting lychee branches, each lychee decorated with a different pattern. The jade is pale grey with dark grey inclusions.
The box is carved in imitation of contemporary cinnabar lacquer incense boxes.
A slightly larger white jade example is published in Arts From the Scholar’s Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, pp. 230-231, Catalogue No.218.
