QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736–1795)
LENGTH: 51.6CM;WIDTH: 29.5CM
The high-quality marbled paper is textured and dyed in an ochre-yellow colour and further enhanced with deliberate water spots to simulate age. A tencharacter vermillion seal mark ‘Qianlong nian fang jin su shan cang jing zhi’(乾隆年仿金粟山藏經紙)is impressed near the centre of the page.
The sheet comes from a batch of sutra paper commissioned by the Imperial Paper Bureau during the Qianlong reign, imitating Song dynasty sutra paper made in 1133 ordered exclusively by the Guanhui Temple from the Jinsu Mountains in Southwest Zhejiang. A Song dynasty example is published in Zhongguo gudai wenfang yongju, Shanghai, p. 241.
SIMILAR EXAMPLE
The paper was highly prized as it was reserved primarily for the front and back end papers of selected books and scrolls, as seen illustrated in Bunbo seigan, Vol. 2, Tokyo, 1986, Catalogue No. 3.
