AN IMPERIAL SANDALWOOD SHAKYAMUNI BUDDHA

QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

H: 8.2CM

The sandalwood figure is seated in a double lotus position on a single lotus pedestal. He wears loose robes falling from one shoulder and his hands are held against his chest, the left hand facing inward and covering the right hand facing outward in a dharmacakrapravartana mudra, a gesture exhibited by Shakyamuni Buddha while teaching his first sermon in Sarnath. The figure is decorated with lacquer gilding with painted pigment on the hair and facial features.
