A BRONZE BRUSHPOT

MING DYNASTY, JIAJING PERIOD (1522-1566)

HEIGHT: 16.8CM

The bronze brushpot is of cylindrical form with a thick rolled lip with scrolling cloud design and rests on three cloud-shaped feet. The brushpot is decorated overall in openwork with a four-clawed dragon in high relief amidst clouds chasing a flaming pearl on one side, a carp emerging above crested waves crashing along jagged rockwork beneath a pavilion on another side, and a scene of two monkeys perched on a pine tree. The base is decorated with a medallion of a scrolling chilong dragon in high relief.
