AN IMPERIAL WHITE JADE DOUBLE-RING

QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

DIAMETER OF EACH RING: 4CM

The double interlocking hoop is carved from a single piece of jade in archaistic style with a dragon and phoenix, respectively. The white jade is slightly translucent and polished to a lustrous surface.

An imperial court painting in a series entitled ‘Twelve Beauties at Leisure Painted for Prince Yinzhen, the Future Yongzheng Emperor’ painted in the Kangxi period between 1709 to 1723 depicts one of the court ladies holding between her fingers a similar white jade double ring, is illustrated in the Royal Academy’s publication China: The Three Emperors 1662-1795, London, 2005, pp. 258-231, Catalogue No. 173.
