QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
LENGTH: 11CM
The wristrest is carved in the form of a pine tree trunk with a
scaly bark and gnarled burls, worked in high relief and openwork to
the front side with entwined branches issuing clusters of pine
needles. The concave reverse is covered in a thin layer of lacquer
and inscribed with an apocryphal Sansong 三松 mark. The bamboo is
patinated to a warm brown tone.
The signature Sansong 三松 refers to Zhu Zhizheng 朱稚征, a
celebrated bamboo carver active during the first half of the 17th
century. He established a distinct style of sculptural high-relief
bamboo carving which was widely emulated in the late Ming and early
Qing period.
