A SMALL CARVED COCONUT SHELL WINE CUP

QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

HEIGHT: 3CM

The small cup is of U-shape. Its deep rounded sides are carved in relief on the exterior to simulate a woven basket, formed from a sophisticated network of rope twists fastened with tied knots and prunus flowers. The rim is encircled by stylised bands of bosses and scrolls. The base is formed from an entangled network of twist ropes around an incised seal mark reading wan 玩 (“plaything”).
