MING DYNASTY, SIX-CHARACTER JIAJING MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1522-1566)

The cup is well-potted with deep rounded sides rising from a straight foot to a
gently flared rim. The interior and exterior are applied with a rich egg-yolk yellow
glaze stopping neatly at the foot, save for the white base inscribed with a six
character ‘Da Ming Jiajing nianzhi’ 大明嘉靖年製 reign mark within a circle.

A closely related example is among the collections of the Palace Museum,
Beijing, published in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace
Museum. Monochrome Porcelain, Hong Kong, 1999, p.49, pl. 44. Another cup
with similar proportions but larger in size, also bearing the Jiajing mark and of
the period, is illustrated in Catalogue of Yuan and Ming Ceramics in the British
Museum, London, 2001, p. 248, Catalogue No. 9:73.
