Scholar's Implements

A CINNABAR LACQUER BRUSH AND COVER

MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)

LENGTH OF BRUSH (WITH CAP): 25CM

The brush is deeply carved from thick layers of vermillion lacquer with a scen depicting a bearded scholar holding a brush whilst pointing at a scholar’s rock under a lush pine tree. He is accompanied by his attendant, who appears to be cleaning the rock with a broom. The brush cap is decorated with two scholars admiring a pine tree, all against a diaper ground, between diaper and keyfret registers.
