Ming Dynasty, Wanli Period (1572-1620)
The brushrest is cast in a form of five peaks surmounting a brick wall. The centre is decorated in openwork with a chilong dragon with its head turned backwards. The reverse depicts four small figures at the entrance of a Daoist temple. The bronze patina is of a pleasing dark brown tone.
A bronze brushrest of similar design of a Daoist temple motif is illustrated in Scholars Desk Materials from the Libraries of the Daimyo: Treasures from the Tokugawa Art Museum No. 4, 1988, p. 63, Catalogue No. 137
