A GILT-BRONZE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL CENSER

QIANLONG FOUR-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1735-1796)

HEIGHT: 8.3CM

The censer is of cylindrical form with a lipped rim and raised on three ruyi feet. The exterior is decorated in bright enamels against a light blue ground, the body with two red shou 壽 characters enclosed within stylised leafy sprays of lotus and the ruyi feet with leafy florets. The base is similarly decorated save for a gilt circle in the centre engraved with a four-character ‘Qianlong nianzhi’ 乾隆年製 mark.

A Kangxi mark and period cloisonné enamel box and cover also decorated with ‘shou’ character amidst lotus scrolls, is in the collection of the National Palace Museum Taipei, illustrated in Enamel Ware in the Ming and Ch’ing Dynasties 明清琺瑯器展覽圖錄, Taipei, 1999, p. 96, Catalogue No. 25.
