The oblong body is supported on four columnar legs, decorated to the exterior in relief with a gilt chevron band interrupted by stylised tapir masks between bands of circles. The flat everted rim is set with two upright loop handles. Cast to the base with a recessed rectangular cartouche bearing an apocryphal sixcharacter Xuande mark 大明宣德年製. The bronze is patinated to a warm brown tone with a matt lustre. The domed hongmu cover is carved in openwork in the shape of a furled lotus leaf.
