A THREE-PEAKED LINGBI BRUSHREST

MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)

LENGTH: 10CM

The small, well-patinated lingbi brushrest is deep grey in tone, naturally formed into a horizontal mountainscape of three peaks resting on an old zitan base. The surface is glossy and lightly textured while the bottom reveals a thick reddish-brown skin.

The lingbi stone, indigenous to the Anhui province, is one of the most popular types of scholar’s rock since the Northern Song dynasty. It is a resonant, dense limestone of high metal content and gives a metallic sound when struck.
