The tool vase is carved from a tapered cylindrical section of ivory
and carved in high relief with a scholar and his attendant under a
bamboo grove in a rocky landscape. The flat base is left
undecorated.
The ivory is patinated to a warm caramel tone, reminiscent of
boxwood.
