SONG DYNASTY (960-1279)
LENGTH: 10.5CM
The jade water vessel is fashioned in the form of a recumbent goose
with a hollowed pebble-shaped body, its neck elegantly extended
forward. The stone is of a translucent white tone. The wood stand is
carved with swirling waves.
The goose’s elongated neck created a beautiful contour to the vessel
and could almost serve as an ergonomic handle, suggesting its
possible function as a pouring vessel on the scholar’s table.
Two similar Liao dynasty (916-1125) goose-shaped boxes and covers
from the Aurora Museum Collection 震旦博物館, one rendered in white
jade and the other in rock crystal, are published in Jades of Tang
Through Qing Dynasties 唐宋元明清玉器, Shanghai, 2012, pp. 82-83 and
322, Catalogue Nos 18 and 228 respectively.
