The brushpot is of cylindrical form with a thick rolled lip and
foot. The body is cast in openwork depicting a pair of dragons
writhing amongst swirling clouds, one clutching a flaming pearl in
its sharp claws and its head turned backward towards another dragon
striding below. The rim is encircled by a keyfret band and the foot
with further dragons striding amidst clouds and foaming waves. The
bronze is patinated to a dark chocolate tone.
A slightly larger brushpot, dated to the Jiajing period and
decorated with a carp leaping the dragon gate, was included in our
2011 Catalogue, pp. 46-47, Catalogue No. 18.
