The flattened pebble is of ovoid form, with the upper section worked in various
levels of relief depicting an archaistic dragon and phoenix in angular scrolls
forming the seal knop. The seal face is carved with a poetic inscription adapted
from Lu Ji’s 陸機 (261-303) Wenfu 文賦 (‘Rhapsody on Literature’). The stone is of
a translucent ivory tone.
The poetic inscription may be translated as
| 籠天地於形內 | Enclose all Heaven and earth within form, |
| 挫萬物於筆端 | and put down the myriad things with tip of brush. |
