A VERTICAL ‘YING’ SCHOLAR’S ROCK

QING DYNASTY (1644-1911)

Vertically orientated, the grey limestone has a dynamic composition formed from sophisticated elliptical slits, crevasses and protruding rocky ledges layering on top of each other and rising to a dramatic C-shaped overhang with a craggy outcrop. The wrinkled surface is pitted and highly porous with occasional perforations and white veining. The rock rests on three points on a carved double-layered Suzhou-style hongmu stand.
